The sets of Shogi pieces ("koma") available on this page are all hand carved ("tebori") or hand painted on either Siamese or native boxwood ("tsuge"). The shogi pieces come in wooden boxes and the price refers to a complete set of pieces. View the detail and quality of craftsmanship that is lavished on each piece here.

Shogi boards of varying specifications may also be purchased here.

Shogi koma trays are also available here.

Tebori-Koma Ranks

There are four basic ranks used in the manufacture of hand carved Shogi pieces ("tebori-koma"). They are:

  • Kiri (paulownia)
  • Ume (plum)
  • Take (bamboo)
  • Matsu (pine)
Siamese boxwood is used in the manufacture of Kiri, Ume and Take-rank pieces. Matsu (pine) is the highest rank. At the Matsu level you can choose whether to have your pieces made with Siamese boxwood, or with the more exclusive native Japanese boxwood.

Engraving Specifications

The pieces are engraved to different font specifications:
  • Kurobori: A simple carving style.
  • Namibori: The cut is of a standard thickness.
  • Chubori: The cut is slightly thinner, giving the character a more delicate appearance.
  • Jobori: The thinnest cut of all, giving the most delicate finish to the character. The Matsu rank Jobori set is the standard Japanese club match set.
At the Matsu level some more exclusive specifications are available:
  • Ryoukobori: A delicate calligraphic font style.
  • Fukabori: This is a thick style of engraving. The pieces have a traditional Japanese look to them.
  • Ichijibori: Only the top half of the full character is engraved. It is a clean, elegant and simple style. E.g. the King character is engraved with just the four lines that make up the kanji "king"). This is the style favoured by the NHK Shogi School.

Hand Painted Koma

  • Urushikaki: A Matsu-rank hand painted set of pieces is also available. Instead of carving the pieces, Japanese Laquer is applied by brush directly to the surface of the piece. See the top left photo below.

Here are the sets that are available from this site:

Left: Matsu "Urushikaki" Set, $80. Right: Kiri "Namibori" Set, $85.

Exclusive Made-to-Order Sets

  • Horiumekoma: After the character has been carved onto the set it is filled with lacquer and then the piece is polished to give a smooth flat surface.
  • Moriagekoma: A special brush ("makiefude") is used to apply Japanese lacquer to a carved piece. This is the most intricate and costly to produce and it is the type that is used in championship matches.

Horiumekoma and Moriagekoma sets can be specially ordered. Drop me a line for more information about how to order.

  • Horiumekoma set: $950-$1,250
  • Moriagekoma set: $2,500-$3,650

"Yes! It arrived this morning, all the way from Japan! The new Japanese Chess board, a block of solid wood, thick as a butcher block, standing on legs, a thing of rare beauty. It arrived this morning from Japan, and I am simply going out of my game-addled gourd!"
