Japanese Homophone Dictionary

Nabeta Kousuke

The Japanese language is notorious for the frequency with which homophones are encountered. There are many words which are written with completely different kanji characters, but which share the same hiragana readings - in other words, which are pronounced in the same way.

This dictionary lists the most common homophones and provides clear and concise Japanese definitions side by side, along with the kanji and hiragana readings. These are the homophones you need to be aware of so as not to get led astray in conversation or when listening to television or radio broadcasts and so on.

One method of vocabulary building is to study the homophones and make connections between them in order to fix them in the memory.

The dictionary measures a little under 7" x 6" so is easy to carry around and contains the following features:

  • Each entry is given in bold black kanji.
  • The Furigana is supplied for each set of homophones.
  • Each term is clearly defined in Japanese, with common sayings that feature the word included.
  • Full index with listings under both kanji and hiragana headings for ease of reference.
  • 1,850 easily confused words are covered.

Born in 1942, Nabeta Kousuke graduated from the Department of Law, Waseda University, and pursued a career in publishing.
