This is a newly revised (JUNE 2007) edition of a popular and handy Kotowaza Dictionary, compiled by Nakagawa Noboru, is one of a series of useful compact dictionaries for the Japanese student.

There is hardly a better way to gain an insight into Japanese wisdom and Japan's ancient culture and language than to study its proverbs.

It cannot be overstated that kotowza are an inherent part of Japanese culture.
The dictionary measures a little over 7" x 6" so it will slip easily into any bag. It has been reorganized to make it navigable by various methods and it is packed with the following features:
  • Proverbs are divided into 15 thematic headings.
  • Proverb entries are in Japanese with furigana.
  • Detailed explanation of the proverb follows in plain Japanese, with hiragana renderings of difficult kanji following in brackets.
  • Alternative proverbs with similar or opposite meaning are shown.
  • Where appropriate, historical and etymological notes are provided.
  • Over 1,100 proverbs listed.
  • Listings follow Japanese syllabary order for ease of reference.
  • A short appendix of English proverbs, with Japanese translation and explanations, has been added.

Born in 1946, Nakagawa Noboru graduated from the Department of Literature at Tokyo University and has pursued a career as an expert in pedagogy and has produced Japanese language dictionaries for middle and high school.
